A MORCHELLA FORAY IN ASTURIAS.

22-4-2012.

It’s been raining continuously since the first of the month. So, hey ho, off we go, Jose Manuel, Juan and myself. We’ve already had 3 forays, reasonably successful each one, but today we expect to have a good harvest, by 9.30 were near our first stream in eastern Asturias. It’s swollen and deep so on with the wellies and off we go. Soon we’re finding those shy morchellas, so hidden away in the undergrowth on the river-bank and luckily the sun is out and the rain is holding off.
The morning goes on and baskets get filled alongside famous salmon rivers’we even come across fishermen, all shaking their heads-and they look with surprise at our harvest.
Time for lunch, a bar by the river, eggs, chips, chorizo and good rioja red wine to wash down the strong local cheese at the end.
Well, I’ve got things to do, but next day, I’ll tell you about the great mushrooms we found in the afternoon, which are now drying by the radiator in the spare bedroom.
Cheers.

Ken Pettit.
